NVIDIA and Epic Games announced the first public showing of Unreal Engine 3 at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Unreal Engine 3 is the first game engine to take full advantage of Shader Model 3.0, a key feature of Microsoft DirectX 9.0. No points for guessing which graphics manufacturer is the only one with a product currently supporting SM 3.0.

Created by Epic Games, Unreal Engine 3 promises to push the limits of game development with its aggressive use of lighting and shadowing capabilities, advanced shader effects, and editing tools. The Unreal game engines are widely used in game development today, as they provide game developers with a flexible and feature-rich foundation for the creation of bleeding-edge PC and console games. To date, the Unreal engines have powered more than 70 game titles, including Splinter Cell, America's Army, Deus Ex: The Invisible War, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In addition to the Unreal Engine 3 showcase, nVidia and Epic will also display in the nVidia booth a sample of the first- and second-round winning game mods from the USD 1,000,000 nVidia Make Something Unreal contest. The year-long contest-which is just about to open its third-round phase for entries-encourages, rewards, and publicly recognizes talented individuals from around the world who can create the ultimate game and entertainment mods based on the hit Unreal Engine. This shows that Nvidia is the leader. Tech wise, features, stability and a more flexible choice for the future.I really dont consider ATI the leader unless you consider how fast they can push a 4 year old game like QuakeIII great. Nvidia this round slightly broke even on the benchmarks but excelled at the feature level. The biggest and most well known game companies & developers will continue working on Nvidias solution for SM3.0 for a year before ATI has anything to show for it. So they will be behind the 8 ball when it comes to developing games for their hardware. And if you dont think SM3.0 will latch on you are crazy. Like people have said, SM3.0 is a developers model. The last time I checked developers make the games.

It may be that the video encoding may have been slugish when the vid got converted to make a smaller download, or that like the guy said....its the 1st card that can run the engina at over 3fps, considering the detail of the lighting and normal maps I think it was amazing :)

Funny thing is Nvidia can't run PS 3.0 or PS2.0 properly or not with out some problems, just check out Farcry. Funny also that Farycry is Nvidia's "The way it is meant to be played" campaign but runs better on ATI.Stupid Nvidiot think before you post.

Also funny that ATI has better image quality despite of Nvidia's PS 3.0. Yes the NV40 was running the Unreal 3 Demo being choppy at times. When Unreal 3 comes out I think the R600 will be out. As of right now ATI is the king proven and fact. Take that to the bank Nvidiot faggots.

I also think that the demo has no PS 3.0 code though the guy in the demo doesn talk about 64 color space64-bit FP =4x16 or partial precision. 64bit per component won’t be available for a long time.It was not displacement mapping it was virtual displacement mapping/offset mapping/some other name which can be done without any problems with SM2

Nvidia has always performed Quake 3 engine titles better then ATI. OpenGl is their strong point. D3D is ATI. And you don't consider them a leader in the GPU industry, unfortunately marketshare shows otherwise. And that's the real guage. ATI is 2nd behind Intel. Nvidia is 3rd and looks to keep it that way for this generation at least. As for Unreal running better on ATI hardware. It's not even out yet people! No one knows for sure. When it is released, the NV50 and the R500 WILL BE OUT and all cards will support PS3.0 or greater. As it stands now, the R3xx chips and the R420 cards run all Unreal games better then Nvidia's "Way It's Mean't To Be Played" chips. Due to the fact that Unreal is a D3D shader intensive game. Not OpenGL.

The thing is....it would make sence that the Unreal team have developed the game engine from scratch to support their own game title first and foremost, so their own game should be the first game to come out using the engine as they know every aspect of it. If another development team were to license the Unreal Engine 3 from Epic their learning curve would be steaper as they would have to experiment with the tools and limitations of the engine too, extending the development time. I think that its a lot more likely that it would be the next unreal title that come out first

Almost all games that will be PS3.0 based will be a hybrid of shaders. It takes developers almost a full year to code for their games. This is why PS1.4 did not catch on until the following year and PS2.0 is just catching on now. Ironic how it is, HL2 will be the only title out this year that will be fully PS2.0 compliant. Other PS2.0 games use a combination of PS1.4 and in some cases, PS1.1. And Unreal 3 by Epic's accounts, will be released in 2006 the latest. That's about 2 full new chip generations people. PS3.0 will be a factor only in 2005.

hi all. i think you are missing th point here. dont forget that ATI is half of nvidia's old team. so basically ATI is the same company as NVIDIA.the real issue is which is the best card for what? its simple: image quality is the same. you will see NO difference when playing. i only doubt NVIDIA because their optimizations show more... performance: ATI wins in Direct 3d (far cry-half life 2 games) while nvidia wins in opengl(doom3).i love doom 3. i quite like nvidia because they are a more "deep" company. but the best now is the radeon. either the 9800 or the x800(no difference, its the same technology). why? how good many opengl games do you see round the corner? though so..

To ic456There is a noticeable difference IQ in both Nvidia and ATI solutions. ATI has much better AA and AF. Also the R420 and the R300 differ greatly from eachother, considering the the R420 is 2-3X more powerful. Also the R420 supports longer shader instruction and supports 3dc.
