Kmart announced it will refuse sale of mature-rated games to anyone under 17, using a barcode scanner that will prompt cashiers to ask for identification from young people.
After Kmart's news conference in Washington, Wal-Mart announced it would adopt the same policy. In a letter last month to Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, the president of Toys R Us said the practice is already in place at his company's stores.

Sessions applauded the move, but said he would prefer that retailers stop selling mature-rated games, as Montgomery Ward and Sears, Roebuck and Co. already have done.
Sessions said he believes "intense involvement" with violent video games can cause a young person to become violent. "Common sense should tell us that positively reinforcing sadistic behavior, as these games do, cannot be good for our children," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan. "We cannot expect that the hours spent in school will mold and instruct a child's mind but that hours spent playing violent games will not."

These stores are just hoping to win sales from tiny-minded idiot parents who don't actually understand games. And in addition to the 'there was more violence in the past, before games were invented' argument, there has to be something said about the lack of laws to prevent said 'sadistically influenced' people from easily getting their mitts on guns.

I think that major stores' responces to violent video games is terrible, first it was the ratings... now they use the ratings to prevent young people from getting the games, it sucks. I am 15 so i will be majorly affected by this even though the stores that are doing it now have a bad selection of games, does anybody think that it will stop here, pretty soon every store will be doing this

This rhetoric is crap. video games are are just that video games. They no more make people hurt people than movies do. If a child is affected in some obscure way by a game, music or movie, then something wasnt right to begin with. Parents interaction and attention with thier kids daily lives does more to raise healthy kids than taking away preseived violent material that the children cant play while both parents are not AT HOME..but at work or wherever.

what do the senators think they are doing?? Videogames are a big part of my life. Im sick and tired of the government trying to govern what we can and cannont play, and what we can and cannot watch. That is not the job of the government, but the job of the parents.

I think it's a good idea, and it's stupid when you start yelling "communism" or "bureaucracy" just because something happens out of your control that you don't like. How is it really communist? It's not like the developers can't lobby against it. It's not like people can't lobby against it. But of course you can't have children voting against it. Is it communist because children can't vote? Well, would you let a 2 year old vote? A 4 year old vote? A 10 year old vote? Would it make sense? You should note that the voting age was set at 18 years old for a reason. But why can't they buy violent or lewd video games? Well, should you let children buy guns? Well that's a rather bad analogy, as guns actually kill people, so how about "do you sell children porn?" or "do you take children to ultraviolent movies?". To say that such things aren't desensitizing is to be blind. If you read the posts here, you'll notice that somehow, children have "a thirst for artificial blood", lots of aggression, and if they can't play violent games, they'll turn to killing people in real life. How did they get this "thirst for artificial blood" and agression in the first place? The "thirst for artificial blood" is alright, but to say that if you can't play your game, you'll turn to real people is ridiculous. That's where actual therapy is needed for the child, as if they're that aggressive, and if they have that kind of need to kill things, they need help as they're no better than your average drug addict. If you want proof, look at how many posts have cursing in them; there's more desensitization for you right there. It's amazing how so many people can't make intelligent comments without a four-letter word spattered throughout their post.Don't get me wrong, I hate censorship, and I fear Gore/Lieberman coming into office and censoring everything that offends _them_, and I think it's really silly when news reports like CNN talk about topics like video game violence affecting children, and showing clips of Doom, but stuff like stopping children from purchasing games that the developer themselves hav

[con't]...but stuff like stopping children from purchasing games that the developer themselves have let a Mature rating be stamped onto their product is how it's supposed to be in the first place, for both the buyer and the seller.Feel free to flame me, but please make sure to spell correctly, and to use your four-letter words as appropriate.

I think it is bull ****. We live in America...and the last time I checked it was a free country. To ban the selling of these games because "violent video games can cause a young person to become violent" is a crock. Where are the parents? I have played these games my whole life, I have watched violent movies my whole life...I have never comitted an act of violence in my 18 years. I am a good kid, because I was brought up to be. My parents have been a part of my life, and have taught me right from wrong. Blaming video games, movies, or singer's lyrics for violence is just a way for parents to escape the feeling of failure. We need to stop pointing fingers at role models, and start looking for the real reasons.

Come on gang....lets at least be literate. Monitoring the sale of some of the more "***** orientated" games should not be a problem. I'm sure my 8 year old son would love to see Laura Croft naked but his hormones need to stay dorment for at least another couple of years. Just to keep the parents of the young girls from trying to burn him at the stake.....
