Sony has delayed the release of its first stand alone Blu-Ray players which now come with an August 15 release date. The first Blu-Ray players were scheduled to appear on June 25 but the Japanese commercial electronics giant has, stealthily, retracted the original date and introduced a new, on or about August 15, retail E.T.A.

As Sony has not made the reasons behind the delay public, we can only make assumptions regarding the reasons for the delay. Sony has been very secretive about the progress it is making on the hardware front for both the PS3 and Blu-Ray and many journalists have suggested that the Cell processor is experiencing a variety of production issues. Many experts suggest that the incorporation of a brand new chip and a brand new DVD format in one device is bound to be plagued by production issues.

It is not clear what effect, if any, the Blu-ray delay can have on the PS3 since the release date for Sony's new console is November 17, some time after the August 15 date. If there is some problem with the hardware it could, potentially, affect the PS3 as this summer was supposed to see the manufacture of the first units.

The delay however, could simply be a strategic move by Sony since an early summer launch for a high price product could disappoint as far as sales go. Until things clear up we will have to wonder but MG will stay on this story for you. Follow the download tab above if you'd like to pre-order a Blu-Ray player with an, on or about August 15 2006 release date.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

First post! My first ever. I haven't even read the article I'm so excited!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Crash and BURN Blu-Ray!!!! Its just the next BETAmax

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

This is following the same exact path as Betamax. It's unreal. $1000-$1300 for a player that is now delayed. HD-DVD is out and costs $499.99. Guess what drive the average consumer is going to purchase? Like Betamax, Blu-ray will die the same death. Cost is going to kill it like the cost of the PS3.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Once again Sony is trying to force a format on consumers and charge a high premium for it. Have they not learned from Beta? Not learned from Mini-Disks? Not learned from UMD? Will they learn when Blu-Ray fails?

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

what are you guys talking about, the blue ray will not fail, the PS3 will fail!, i'm looking forward to blue ray disc's, it's about time they made 50gb disc's

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Nash, if the PS3 fails, so will Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray adoption requires the success of the PS3. Looking from the RECENT report about the PS3 at theinquirer, the PS3 is looking to fail in a big way

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

With every passing day i ask myslef, "Can it get any worse for Sony, Blu-Ray and the PS3..."The i read the article about the PS3 at theinquirer about poor yields and the reducing of the 3.2 ghz cell CPU to 2.8 The fact that the parts inside the PS3 are too big for the case. They are now worrying about heat dissapation. The RSX GPU inside is not up to full 550MHZ. And now this delay on Blu-ray? This expensive Titanic called the PS3 and Blu-ray is sinking fast

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

50gb discs ? to my knowledge so can HD DVD ( dual layered ? ). Even if not, lets imagine 25gb. Thats more than enough for the moment. to my knowledge HD DVD drive costs(or will cost) 100$ for xbox360 and probably in range of 200-500$ for others. BLUE RAY - 1000$... Now what about DISCS ?

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Sony sure knows how to sink a ship before it even sets sail.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Ps3 and Blueray drive are just too expensive for the General Market. Even tho Sony believes its expensive console will do well, I have the opposite opinion. I like many others in the pc market only buy Midlevel Graphics cards even tho we have the money we stay away from the real expensive Toys. I want a Ps3 so bad but 800$ after taxes in canada is ajoke. The xbox360 is 489$ canadian. No way will i spend an extra 300+ dollars for a console. I'd rather get an xbox360 and a wii.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Blu-ray dual layer disks are 50gb, HD-DVD dual layer disks are 25gb. Blu-ray might get quad layer disks(100gb) but hell, the data writing rate is too low for that much space(25gb,50gb,100gb), it'll take too much time to burn a whole disk.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Look past the sony/toshiba hype, holographic storage technology is almost here and it will break the 1tb storage barrier in about 2 years(its starting with 200gb disks).look for "holographic disks" on google.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

well... still i think it gonna be awesome specailly when a game gonna be over 20 GB ! think about the Video Qality that gonna be included in the game ... can't wait until ps3 with there BluRay Disc Release

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

motherf**ker megagames wont lest post fix ur system whores

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

f**k ill make it short and simple.20GB games = 2GB game content 18GB of HD crap teasers, game demos etc.Even if its full 20GB content( whod be dumb enough to waste 10 years for such development )... current DVDs read 1-7MBps versus harddrive - 100-150MBps. Now even if a simple BF2 demo loads for 3 minutes on HD. I pitty you retards loading 20GB in row ( imagine GTA style RPG full of city content and details, just like PS3 likes it ) - IMPOSSIBLE!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

As for writers... take a look at DVD, i remember a reader costing 200$ where writer was 1000$. I imagine something as scary with Blue ray. Not to mention cost of discs....

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

$17.99 all the way to $52.99 per Blu-Ray disk!!! That's insane. You can keep it Sony.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Considering a DVD/R/RW burner Player with progressive scan costs $59.99 at best buy with disks costing $15 per 100 now, i see no reason to spend this type of wasted money on Blu-Ray. $1300 for a player? $17.99 per disk? Great deal Sony. *eyes rolling again*

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

1 more thing. If people actually think this new formats are going to have all the space used for real game play and not demos and FMV galore. I have swamp land in florida i would love to sell you. If a game takes 1-2 years to make thats 5-10 gigs long. How long will it take devs to create a 25g or even a 50g game with full playable content? lololol. Won't happen anytime soon people. Only EA and Sega, UBIsoft can afford to make that investment.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Hey. Where is that ultra fanboy Guruboy to defend Sony?

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

I would love to see a game use a full 50gig dual layer Blu-Ray disk without full of full motion cut scenes. I don't see it happening though before the next round of consoles are relesed. Can you imagine the cost and development time to do something like that? Bloodyhell

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

i would spend $5000 on blu-Ray. That's what Sony would love you to say. f**k that. I will pass

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

blue ray and HDDVD ( not the HD ) dont almost concirn games at all. You can still save games on CDs and no problems. But where do you need such a big format ? OFCOURCE, MOVIES - HD resolution ! so to make it all understandable. Xbox360 does not need HD DVD, if you want to watch HD movies with it, get it ( assuming u got TV ). As for sony, they just cannot afford to lose the war so you just have to pay extra, no sepparate buying.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

why the hell you would guys WANT blue-ray to fail...sony makes good quality systems and you guys want it to fail? wtf!!!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Sony will live up to the hype that surrounds the blu-ray. Yes it is possible for developers to make games in under 5 years to fill up space on a blu-ray. Higher quality textures and backgrounds will eat up memory. More polygons more memory. If you are a developer then you will know there is never going to be enough space for what you want in a game.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

"Sony will live up to the hype that surrounds the blu-ray" For their sake they better. They said this of UMD and Mini-Disks. Look where those formats are now. You have good faith in Sony Guruboy. I don't by their past record with formats. 0-3

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

And speaking of hype. Sony has yet to live up to the hype of the PS3. It has been a major let down. Changed specs. Delays. Parts not fitting in the case. Few to no playable games. Ones that are, only certain high profile people have access to them. Whatever hype Sony created in 2005 has washed away totally as more details are leaked about the PS3 and Blu-Ray.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Only the big Software houses will be able to create games in multi-threaded format at sizes of 25gigs to 50 gigs or more. Right now it takes 3x as long to create Multi-thread games verus single thread games as said by Tim Sweeney(the reason most if not all devs are still coding games in single thread format)Now imagine a multi-thread game with 50 gigs of playable content? Games right now costs 20 million US to make and bring to market, quadrauple the size and make it muli-thread format. The cost will sky-rocket. Only 1st and 2nd party devs can afford the manpower and time and money to do that. almost all 3rd party devs cannot. They just don't have the capital or manpower. Expect to see Wii get most of those Devs.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

I can bet the farm if i had one that you will not see 1 title filling a full HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disk with playable content. If they fill it, it will be with FMV and other "extras" Not real gameplay. Look ho long it took HL-2 to make? Or DOOM 3? Elder Scrolls? Now expand it by 10 times with HD visuals and make it Multi-Threaded. Ladies, you're looking at 3-4 years of developemt.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

When the price for Blu-Ray drops from the retarded price of $1300US, then i might consider buying it. Until then. I keep my DVD player.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Wow! Its amazing how so many people 'know' so much about something very little! ;)

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

dumb bastards!!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

@ Anonymous 19:45 i agree with you, except not 3-4 years of development, rather 8 with a team of 100. To thouse who dont know yet, next gen games take multi millions to develope, we'r talking 5-10 million dollar investment for an AAA title. As for Blue ray vs(999$) HDDVD(499$).. 1080 content is about 2-3 times bigger than PAL. Now if pal is fit with superb quality on casual 5GB dvd, then 3x 5GB = 15GB for a 1080 movie. Whats more even though Blue ray supports 50GB discs, Toshiba has announced triple layer HD DVDs - 45GB... Look at the prices. I think it spells doom for blue ray

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

LOL. Get this Sony fanboys. You probably read the story about the PS3 having terrible memory read bandwidth on the inquirer earlier. Now tell me, whats so good about having 50gig of data on a disk when the PS3 can only handle limited amounts of geometry anyhows?

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

"Sony Playstation 3 PS3 Console With 60GB HDD & 3 Games (Formula One 06/Warhawk/Singstar)" You can now pre-order a PS3 with 3 games for the bargin basement price of 550 pounds. :p That's over $1000US and $1000CDN. Wow. What a cheap cheap price. *rolling eyes one more time*

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

What i do know Anonymous 23:53 is the fact that Blu-Ray costs doulbe if not more then a HD-DVD player and costs double for the Media Blu-Ray disks. That's all i need to know not to ever purchase it.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Samsung's Blu-Ray player is out now officially. As for the fanboying against Blu-Ray: The disks are actually cheaper. Don't believe me? look at the prices of HD-DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies. Besides which, early adoptors of new formats /always/ pay more. Suck it down.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Actually your wrong. Blu-Ray disks range in cost from $17.99 all the way to $52.99. HD-DVD disks are cheaper. Suck that down

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

you suck sonys blue ball$

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Cost for Blu-Ray media will be double that of HD-DVD media. Simply because HD DVD format, relies on a reasonably well understood process.

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

HD DVDs are constructed very similarly to existing DVDs, and the basic discs can be made with relatively minor modifications to existing DVD manufacturing lines....

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

This does not apply for Blu-Ray disks as they need totally different equipment

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

the link is broken....

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

YAY!!! FIRST POST!!!!1 PWNED j00 n00bs!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

I just pre-ordered my Blu-Ray player for the awesome price of $1350.99CDN At the Sony store. EAT IT!

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

Looks like you ate it ...$1350 flushed down the toilet ...stupid Moron ! !

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

"I just pre-ordered my Blu-Ray player for the awesome price of $1350.99CDN At the Sony store. EAT IT!" Do you want a medal?

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

The new holographic discs will smash everything that is available now. HD-DVD may even suffer also. Microsoft will slap sony to oblivion, just like sony did to SEGA.Consoles suck, role on the PC's with adnanced physics etc.PS3 is doomed... (but thanks for the cell processor any way).

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

I wouldnt be worried about the initial cost of the PS3, when the PS1 first came out i saw it in a duty free shop (i was doing some travelling at the time) for $800AUS and that stormed the market as we all know and as with HDDVD v BluRay, their are some serious heavyweights on both sides, the biggest players being sony and dell v microsoft and intel ... and as to the price, the market has proven that they will pay the price for home cinima entertainment, you will be hard pressed to even find a crt tv these days, is all HD widescreen plazma and LCD and they are still NOT cheep

Sony Delays Blu-Ray

somehow i think that both technologies are very similar and will be used together in a single drive in future. However I do think that its a bit weird that HDDVD drive by toshiba has a P4 processor in it... I mean did they hide something I dont know bout in my DVD ? Back on earth though. I feel in few years the drives will merge and maybe best qualities of both will bring the price down. Maybe some criples cheap Cell will be spinning them... who knows
