A new expansion for chilly city builder survival title, Frostpunk, called The Fall of Winterholm is arguably the game's darkest storyline yet. It tasks players with digging through the dirt, ice, and frozen remains of a once prosperous settlement to find out what happened to its long-gone inhabitants.
You'll not do so in its aftermath though, but at the helm of the settlement while it's in decline. Building off of hints at Winterholm's fate in the main game, Frostpunk's new expansion wants you to see what you can do to keep it running while it's on its last legs. This is nothing new to veterans of Frostpunk's cold and foreboding atmosphere, but what the new expansion does, is force you to think fast and think around someone's else's design decisions. No longer can you plan ahead for the expansion of your settlement, because you're having to work around the limitations of the existing one, while dealing with all of the problems that come from a society that is falling apart at the seams.
There is some hope though. New buildings like a repair shop and some additional mechanics give you a little helping hand (thanks Kotaku), but they're not much and as you approach the latter stages of the free expansion, you're going to need anything you can get.
If you want to try it out, all you need to do is own the base Frostpunk game and download the latest update. Let us know how you get on with the misery simulator in the comments below.
