Nintendo Confirms And Plays Down That Wii U Was Hacked On Day One

Just a few hours after official launch, one NeoGAF forum member managed to “hack” his way into the Miiverse admin panel and debug menu.

“I found an admin access list or something to that effect,” the forum member, named Trike, wrote. “I couldn't really do anything from there though. I could view different messages from a developer. One mentioned that there would be big games coming out (announced?) on the 10th of December.”

Nintendo acknowledged the “breach” but affirmed that it was not a result of a successful hack. “"It has come to our attention that some people were able to access a mock up menu on Miiverse following the launch of Wii U in the US," Nintendo said in a statement to the press. “Please note that this was only a mock up menu and has now been removed and is not accessible.”

All Trike had to do to gain access to the debug menu was pressing “X” while hovering over the exit button in the Miiverse menu. Needless to say, this has been disabled shortly after the forum post went online.
