Call of Duty: WWII takes us back to franchise basics

Beyond taking us back to the World War II era of war, Call of Duty: WWII is a return to classic CoD gameplay as well. Hearkening back to the early days of the series, where it was about having boots on the ground, running and gunning action in a high-adrenaline, high-stakes war setting. It's about feeling vulnerable and just about able to impact the action of the world as it rages around you, rather than seeming like the superhuman who can double jump, wall slide and blast off into space to save the universe.

Instead of a solar-system spanning story, Call of Duty: WWII will see players battling across several European theatres of war, including the Normandy landings at D-Day, conflict in France, Belgium and Germany - no mention has been made yet if we look at the Pacific theatre of war though.

"More than two and a-half years ago we made the decision to return this franchise to its roots, and Call of Duty: WW2 does so in epic fashion," said Eric Hirshberg, Activision CEO in his attempt to dispel the idea that the success of Battlefield 1 is what returned the franchise to the early 20th century. "The team at Sledgehammer Games is delivering an authentic, gritty, cinematic experience that honours both the epic scale, and the human struggle of the greatest war the world has ever known. This game will let longtime fans experience WW2 like never before, and will introduce this historic conflict to a whole new generation of gamers in the process."

The reveal trailer for the game seemed to go down well with fans and gave us a solid look at how fraught with peril and emotional scenes the single player campaign will be.

Of course the multiplayer will no doubt dispel all of that for the usual run and gun action, but we'll wait and see to judge that completely.
