Sony has released its long-awaited V2.00 firmware update for its PSP handheld for the U.S., adding improved functionality and a variety of features.
According to Sony adding Internet access to its Play Station Portable is a move aimed at increasing the handheld gaming device's appeal as a mobile entertainment center.
Sony Computer Entertainment America has released the PSP firmware update in order to allow wireless Internet access on the device, including a new Web browser to connect to online content and email services. The software update will also increase data security on the device and enhance digital photo-sharing and video playback capabilities.
Many believe the features introduced by firmware 2.00 were not initially planned to be released this soon by Sony but were introduced as an answer to Nintendo's better selling DS handheld. Since its March U.S. launch, Sony's PSP has sold nearly 2 million units, a figure that is well below that achieved by Nintendo's DS handheld console which has however, been available for longer.
