The graphics war has entered a new phase and we are now asked to forget the number of pipelines, whether PS 2.0 or 3.0 is supported even the special compression methods used and we are told to concentrate on clock speeds.

nVidia was quick to reply to ATIs clock speed boost, revealed a couple of days ago, with a speed bump of its own. In a recent nVidia briefing to its partners the company confirmed that the Geforce 6800 Ultra will clock at over 450 MHz. The details of how that will be achieved were not that clear but insiders claim that this boost will come courtesy of some impressive BIOS tweaking. The clock speed change is, apparently, something nVidia had been planning to do for some time now since it is reported that samples, clocked at the higher speeds, are already doing the rounds. nVidia must have been expecting the ATI clock boost then and the ball is now sitting pretty in ATIs court. Even though it may appear that the Canadian company does not have that many options available, we are not too sure if minor clock speed changes are enough to really make a difference in real world gaming conditions.

In other graphics war news, the first ATI X800PRO images have surfaced and you can view the board by following the Screens tab above. It has also been reported that the X800Pro and X800XT will only consume a maximum of 80W, meaning that there will be no need for an external power connector and that the card may fit nicely in most modern cases and may not dim the lights in the house when you start gaming.

Another story which may upset ATI is that the X800PRO seems to be up for pre-order in, at least, one web site with a 05/07/2004 ETA and a USD 499 price tag. Having your board up for sale before you have officially announced it must be slightly embarrassing, especially when you are building a Get Ready to XPerience It teaser campaign. This is from Hardcop and Hexus " Nvidia is in a desperate state and have now gone to their partner Gainward to create a water cooled 6800 version".They go one to say that this decision is not respectable, and that watercooling is an option that should be left for modders and hardcore gamers to do themselves.

Editor's personal conclusionRegarding features and performance, R100 was prodigious, R200 even better, and R300 finally turned the tide regarding performance for good. With very small improvements to this chip (leading to R360), ATI managed to embarrass Nvidia again and again. Even NV38, a higher-clocked version of NV35 which is a quite an improvement over NV30, could not really compete with 9800 XT. Now Nvidia brings a completely new architecture with massive improvements regarding performance, they are still going to lose the battle once more, this time by a smaller margin, though.[url removed]

i was also feeling hope in nVidia for soemthing good (not that i was going to get one over an ATi) but it still wasnt as good as i thought it would even be. Man Nvidia is f**ked watercooling doesn't count, and the R480 is on the way. NV40 has hit its limit already, Nvidia is doomed. Also Farcry which is suppose to be a Nvidias game runs better in every way on the rival R420, funny.

ATIDIOT have you seen the reviews with the 6800? They had uber issues with drivers. Not one with the R420. Nice try Nvidiot. That old song and dance about ATI drivers being poor is so laughable that all websites, even the Nvidia biased Tom's Hardware says otherwise. And for a "Way It's Meant To Be Played" game such as FarCry (the game that so-called sports PS3.0) runs slower on Nvidia hardware and had driver and IQ issues. Now that's what you call POOR DRIVERS. Give it up Nvidiot. Can't use the driver excuse anymore. That died the day they brought out the 9700pro.

ATi's new 4.4 drivers are almost flawless to me. So far, there have been no problems when ive used them. And from what i heard, nVidias drivers are a complete failure. The palin fact that the 800pro version is faster then the 6800Ultra version should make Nvidia cry. Just like ATI has said. The 12 pipeline R420 will be faster then the 16 Pipeline NV40. And it's much smaller and runs cooler and quieter and fits in any pc case.

Plus, what happens if someone needed the extra pci slot in their mb. (Though im saying, i dont think their is many people who can fill up 6 pci slots -(Standard)-) What happens then? Nvidia will be bringing out a higher clocked NV40 from it's partner. A watercooled version at that. But that's sad. They need a water cooled version to beat a single slot solution chip that is normally clcoked? Good job ATI.And how much can you clock the NV40 or even the R420? The maximum clock speed for 0.13 die size is 600MHZ. And considering the NV40 is running 220 million transistors and uses major power to run it, they won't be able to over-clock the chip past 550 without extreme cooling. Can you say dustbuster again. They over-clcoked the R420 to 555MHZ and 1200MHZ memory clock speed without issues. All this on basic cooling! Can you imagine using passive cooling? The over-clcoked NV40 won't help with the numbers shown in the reviews. It has to do with shader performance. And 50MHZ increase in core and Memory will not be a significant jump in speed. It only puts the 6800Ultra on par or beats the 12 pipeline R420 then. Not the R420 high-end part. Look at the over-clock reviews for the test setups at HardOCP.com, Tomshardware.com, GamersDepot.com, Techreport.com, DriversHaven.comATI has stole Nvidia's thunder again. So who's smoking something HALLUNCIGENIC NOW?
