Sony CEO: We’ll Show Our Next Console Only After Microsoft Shows Its Own

Sony president, Kaz Hirai, seems to be content on repeating the company’s PlayStation 3 launch mistake by holding off PlayStation 4 (Orbis) release until Microsoft has launched its Xbox 360 predecessor (Durango).

"Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?" he explained to British magazine, The Times.

With both Orbis and Durango specs nearly finalized, most enthusiasts expected official announcements to be made during this year’s E3 expo in June. This looks less likely now.

This quest for processing power superiority has lead Sony to release PlayStation 3 a full year after Xbox 360. When Sony’s consoles finally made it to the market in 2006, its main competitor had already enjoyed a market lead of 10 million units sold. Even worse, Nintendo Wii was released around the same time PlayStation 3 was launched but it still managed to overshadow both consoles before the end of 2007, effectively proving that raw processing power is not the decisive factor in this market.

Wow. MegaMan, that was the longest, most inconsistent hate comment about Sony and Microsoft I have ever wasted my time to read. Seeing as how you're loving on Nintendo, you probably really havent played the 360 or the PS3, not to mention the first looks at these next gen consoles.Educate yourself before you write a meanless story about your undirected hate.

They BOTH suck!!! ...typo again :P

I'm sorry but Sony and Microsoft both suck when it comes to bringing out consistent quality games and gaming consoles at competitive prices, and Microsoft sucks more...and I only say Sony sucks because I didn't like their first console (which is a souped up version of the SNES/Super Famicon CD attachment, which was a Nintendo project that was scrapped, and was to be in direct competition with the SEGA CD...you can look this up in your old GamePro issues if you still got 'em...and the project was scraped for good reason being that SEGA no longer became a threat..this its also learned that Sony's 1st gaming console success was brought about indirectly by Nintendo.), and because of that, I never bought any of Sony's sequel consoles. I do own a 360 and Wii and I'm highly dissapointed with the 360 when comparing it to the Wii. First off, THE GAMES SUCK. I know Nintendo loves to reintroduce their core charcters ( eg. Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, etc...Sonic ...oops...), but they are masters at making great games with their line up and if you doubt that, and get with E3, the majority of reputable gaming mags, and history and time because Nintendo has already made history with their core characters and they are still here in today's time doing the same thing as in yesterday's time. Anywho..."pound-for-pound" a "gamer-purist" gets more gaming value for the dollar when not choosing to go with 360. The 360 stand-alone console is more expensive then the Wii without the wireless feature that already comes with the Wii (ie. Wii Remote vs Kinect)--a gamer will have to buy an expensive attachment for the 360 console in order to fully compete with the Wii features. Now the feature comparison: Aftering shelling out all that doe for the 360, you would think that their would be some convienece provided, or some complementary services render for paying a lot...i mean after all, people usually pay high buck for convenience. But Noooo...with Microsoft and gaming, you pay for more limitations. First off, the games that came with my Kinect (ie. Kinect Adventures) FAIL in comparison in gaming quality and replay value than that ones that came with my Wii (ie. Wii Sports). The controls for the Kinect games were laggy not intuitive as the Wii remote. Wii Sports gaming felt polished whereas Kinect Adventures felt like eating brand-X after being served Kellogg's. I FELT like I was almost emulating real-life bowling, boxing, golf, and tennis with Wii Sports (which game before Kinect Adventures); but with the Kinect, I felt like a scarecrow that was just extending its limbs, waving its hands in the air, and swaying from side-to-side (depending on the direction the wind's is blowing me I guess...). Also, the Will does not set a space requirement to use its wireless technology...but Kinect games will not function if the space is too small or multiplayer will not function if space is not large enough. Second, you have to pay a membership to play online with XBox, whereas its free on the Wii (and I hear its the same with playstation), but you can STILL obtain a free membership at Club Nintendo and earn points to purchase QUALITY games if you like (not like those on the iPhone...and those including like them classics (some deemed by E3) you loved on your old school Nintendo system...as well as new too). Third, Netflix is free on the Wii (provided that you already have a Netflix membership) but you have to pay for an xBox live membership regardless of already being a Netflix member...why must I continue to pay to obtain functionality for my Microsoft gaming console after already paying so much already? Fourth, the Wii already comes with a built-in Internet browser (ie. Opera), but Xbox doesn't...WHAT??!!?? After already giving up my kidney and lung for this stupid Microsoft paper-weight, you mean to tell me that I can't brows the web on it ( and don't be fooled by the Bing search bar people because that is not a web browser...ya know...The thing that you use to type in @gam3s.c0m and view this message for this forum?)? Microsoft is a freaking computer company who created and owns the world most popular browser, Internet Explorer, which comes free on ALL PCs with a Windows operating system. I hear Sony, who founded Blu-ray, provides its optic disk technology services to its gaming community...so you mean to tell me that Microsoft cant provide its founded technology to its gamers when its already free on most PCs? Blu-ray is not free but its giving to the playstation owners (I hear...) Oh wait... I forget... YOU CAN browse the Internet with the 360, but you will have to turn on your PC and link your 360 to it so the 360 can "borrow" the browser installed on the PC. But...what if I own Mac or a Chromebook...or what if I don't own a PC with Windows...what if I have Linux as the OS? In the end, the only thing Xbox 360 can show to justify its high price tag is that its the most powerful system in terms of graphics, sound, and processing...however, what good is that if games suck? Nintendo showed that less is sometimes more, and that power isn't everything when it beat out ALL the competition during the Wii debut along with Sony's console after a year of the 360 being on the market. Power is everything when you have your game-quality in check--and Nintendo proved that with the SNES over the Genesis. SEGA like Nintendo, has a huge rep in making quality games, and I wish for them to be back instead of these two clowns in the game, but with both companies tieing in terms of Game quality(and I'm referring to SEGA and Nintendo, being that one can confuse my last statement to be for Sony and Microsoft since one could think that those both tie in game quality too...however at to lower spectrum of poor game quality)..., the SNES won due to its power ( And if you don't think so, get copy of any Street Fighter II edition and Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 for each the SNES AND Genesis and then come back to me.). All and all, not choosing Microsoft for your gaming needs will most likely get you more gaming for your dollar and you will occasionally be able to play without paying all the time...with Microsoft...it seems the company who likes to charge high prices for every single service directly and indirectly related to gaming, thus likes to play with your money and NOT concerned with you PLAYING at a high level (I stated PLAYING...I dont mean PAYING...which is PLAYING minus the L. If you happen to substract that L and start PAYING more than PLAYING, you take the L, which stands for LOSER!!!). Oh and be sure to gut-check those rumors of the Xbox One regarding those new gaming restrictions (eg. the used-game, friend-borrowing, andd movie watching fees) that you oh so love to pay for...and I understand that the used game fee is "supposed" to help developers make money... But the chance to make money came at the intial sale when the game was bought new..from there...the developers already made money, and the used game was sold from a gamer to reclaim some money (usually less and never more than the price of the intial sale unless its one of those collector edition games...like the red cartridge version of that Spider-Man game for the SNES called Maximum Carnage...I think...)paid on the game...money which is not taken from the developers but from the used-gaming dealer who bought the game from the person who once had it new...with the purpose to resell it...thus the again...the developer already made money off the intial sale and no money earned from that sale was taken... Never Nintendo nor SEGA or would impose such restrictions on gaming... Gaming is fun and Microsoft is not... Sorry I had nothing too much good to say with Sony...again (and stated above) my 1st impression of them wasn't good since I know that they used a scraped Nintendo project to jump in the game (...and act like they the best without earning any stripes), which was a modified project that I didn't like...I did not like Redsident Evil for it, I did not like Crash Bandikoot, and I did not like the feel of the playstation controller...maybe it was because I played my friends playstation (which may had wear 'n tear, but I don't remember since its been a while), but the controller felt loose, ragged, cheap...thus I didn't go to buy from Sony(but maybe a chance in the future), and I'm never going to buy another Microsoft gaming system. I know people don't like Nintendo maybe because of the fuzzy characters or the company's lack of interest in making a system that looks good on paper in terms of its specs...but maybe if the competition would step they're game up in terms of their game quality (and not the quality of their game they play to you in trying to get your money)...maybe Nintendo will respond back like they did against the Genesis...again...power isn't everything...the Wii beat out the two top powerful systems of its generation...and more notably...the Game Boy had shown this as well...Remember back in the day when it had no color except spinach and Game Gear (and that powerful yet failed Neo Geo system was out then too) was all powerful and might with the color screen? The SEGA Game Gear was so powerful that 6 ( or was it 8) AA batteries couldn't give 2-4 hours of play (and rechargeable batteries was just a dream then) when the Game Boy gave you 8+ hours. In the end, who was the survivor...? The Game Gear died and the Game Boy eventually became powerful and evolved to the 3DS...with the PSP being today's Game Gear (doesn't it almost look like one too?), it seems Sony took SEGA's place and Microsoft took Neo-Geo's place. Nintendo doesn't need to put out a powerful system to beat the competition as well as provide you with quality games...and the Wii U is going to prove that again...and you know you already see it because you already know what Microsoft has in store for you...and you see how Sony is with their new project...freaking playing 'hide-and-seek' with it and don't want to show it until Microsoft shows theirs..thus putting stress on us in the gaming community because WE WANT TO SEE IT....While Nintendo just comes out how they come out--confident and unaffected by this dead competition ...again ...sometimes less is more and Nintendo spanks Microsoft and Sony with less....and only SEGA had what it took to push the big N to outdo the ex-Sonic franchise with a 'spec-on-paper' system..I WANT BACK SEGA...I WANT BACK THE EPIC GAMING CONSOLE BATTLES, not this trash between Xbox and Playstaton...because they BOTH lose.

What a sad person you are.

What a sad person you are. If the only games consoles out were Nintendo Id take up fucking knitting, as Im not into childrens games thanks. As for Sega, they fucked themselves up, I mean its not a good idea to launch a console earlier than advised and then tell no fucker about it!

THEY BOTH SUCK!!! (saw typos in previous)

Stupid

I love how everyone is fighting over which console is better and blaa blaa blaa who care. How cares if someone bought and xbox360 and you bought a PS3. Do you own sony or microsoft?!?! didn't think so, so why are you defending something that hasn't asked to be nor does it need to be defended by what companies consider nothing more than peasants they collect taxes from. NO ONE CARE WHAT YOU THINK IS BETTER!! You bought what you liked for whatever ever reason you did. It's not about you being poor pr smarter, idk why ppl insist of making wars over things that have virtually nothing to do with them, like a sport team. "Heat is the best" "No way man lakers are better" are these companies or teams or whatever else you've attached your self to sending you a check in the mail for every time you defend them???? NO... didn't think so. There here for you to enjoy them so enjoy and SHUT UP! why don't you stop fighting over stupid things and spend your time doing something productive maybe get a life (some not all) and some of you need to get your self together and stop looking for ppl who are different enough from you that you can attack to make yourself feel better because your mother didn't hug you enough. On another note Xbox got away with charging because of their "Features" (most of which you can access from a tv of laptop or even your phone and much easier), now that sony is stepping their game up what makes you think they wont pull the same crap. Should anyone have to pay to full experience a game that they "own" I think not. And if you think sony wouldn't here's a newsflash for your THEIR A COMPANY just like every other company they want your money and need it to run their business, you will never be their #1 priority no matter how much they claim you are, their only try to appease you for some extra cash just like a striper trying to make the $20s and not just $1s. So once again how about using some of that energy into making sure that no system forces you to pay for extra non-sense that you don't need or already have on some other device.

Kaz did it again.....Not!

It's funny how this article basically lets you know Kaz was showing a little "gamesmanship" their with that statement. It intention was to bomb (in a good way) first all along. That what happens you you assume.

The console wars

People everyone it doesent matter if you have ps3 xbox 360 pc or any other console what matters is that we be grateful we have technology if we didn't have electricity the consoles would be useless next we need to be happy with the systems we have and respect others opinions

Xbox is epic

You claim I am poor for using a free playstation network... Guess what a Rich person would do the same. If you want to waste your money power to you. Nothing is really free it cost someone do the math.

Why are you all fighting

Just shut up and tell the gaming corporations to get you're shit list's done. Form up and tell them what needs to be done, because you're the ones who actually play these things. Don't argue on a forum and tell each other how bad you all are, you're talking to people who will just contradict you. Go to the game developers and tell them how bad they are. P.S. first post by Steve-----go fuck yourself you fat pompous fool.

Microsoft has always been the

Microsoft has always been the Chevrolet of gaming. They jumped in the game with a console that was little more than a one trick pony. It was no more than an over priced under powered computer that cost them twice as much to manufacture as what they took in. The XBOX 360 was a slightly better version of the XBOX. In short, a polished turd. It had zero going for innovation, the pay to play format of XBOX live is insane and all you morons who pay into it can send me a check to play on an imaginary user interface. Since you're all idiots I should be a millionaire by the time you finish reading this sentence. Two events are the reason for slightly stronger sales for XBOX 360. The PS3 launch delay, and equipment failure. And if you people who bought your 2nd and 3rd and 4th consoles due to stupid blind devotion to being a fan boy had sense enough to check out other consoles you might have already had your PS3 slim for the same price as the 6th XBOX 360 you bought and saved yourself some money. Personally I enjoyed being one of the exclusive people who had a P23 before it was marketed for homeless people at the low economical walmart price of 199.99. I enjoyed the fact that you had to have some cash to get the good stuff. But then they made it as cheap as the XBOX 360. Only difference was, it was still a better system and still had blu-ray. My gen 1 cinderblock sized reverse tech PS3 still works like a dream, how many XBOX 360's have you bought? I've had this thing roughly 8 years I believe. In closing. You're not going to find out until Microsoft has your money safely in their coffers and their CEO's of the gaming division are spending their bonus check you paid for on hookers and steak dinner, that you will have to be hooked to the internet at all times for the giant paper weight you bought to work properly. It'll be awesome when you try to borrow a friends game or buy a used title only to find out you get to pay extra for it. Oh and let's not forget their will probably be an extra price for a separate XBOX One XBOX Live. Because if I had a bunch of stupid gamers who just kept tripping over themselves to hand me money, I'd keep asking for more. PS3 was always better than XBOX360 and the PS4 will continue this trend. Tata

Wrong

Just because your ps3 still runs after 8 years doesn't everyone else's does! My Xbox ran for much longer than that and it worked perfectly fine! Honestly i don't care if you think ps3 is better than Xbox360 because ps3 isn't better. I bet your one of those no life bums who either sit and play your dumb little play station or sit at the computer and comment all day on forums or websites. The only reason im here commenting on your comment is because i was looking something up on the Internet and i came across your comment and i thought I'd talk some sense into your thick skull! Now go get a life ya bum!!!

Hello Steve, In regards to Xbox One having to constantly be connected online to work properly, you are correct. But why do you hate that idea so much if you loved that "The PS3 was prices to keep the homeless away." Wouldn't that idea go hand in hand with HAVING to pay for internet and HAVING to pay to play online? You are contradicting yourself as you are saying you were happy that you had an PS3 before poor or "homeless" people could afford it, yet it makes you happy that you play online with these "homeless" people because they don't have to pay $8/Month, or $50/year. There are many reasons to love both consoles, and most people choose one and stick by it. Also, you DO realize that the Sony and the PS4 is planning on doing the same thing with used and borrowed games as Microsoft and Xbox One??? There have been many reports of this, Sony is simply waiting for the Xbox to take all the heat, and then they will quietly announce that prior to the release of the console. So in closing, keep your ignorant, nonsensical, egotistical comments to yourself. We get it, you favor the PS3 for various reasons, and I have had the same 80GB xbox for 7 years myself, and have heard of plenty PS3s going out as well. Farwell Cunty Steve

Xbox does the same as

Xbox does the same as playstation dude. They just do it in a different way. If you think playstation is better just because it's more expensive then you'll love the next one. It should be really good...... I mean expensive. Do you consider yourself an exclusive playstation customer just because you were stupid enough to waste your money on one. Sounds like you got a faulty one because they are almost as unreliable as the xbox, so it's strange that yours is still operational. Mine is literally a door stop and my playstation 2 holds open my bedroom door :) Innovation? Are you trying to tell me that Sony has made ANY leap in innovation? Wow, they made their controller bigger so they could squish a tiny touchpad on it, thumbs up for great idea... Not. You are correct though with the paying twice for games, what idiot will fall for that. Game rental places are going to be very wary of that and possibly not even stock games for it because let's face it, who wants to pay twice? Other than that, you are a complete playstation loser

What?

What? you don't show your console because others can clone "specifications"???? It's in the experience that console excels, in the environment, in the brands and in the game deals they can get with software houses. As soon as specs and hype goes on you need to get alot of these figured it out and signed BEFORE competition. Loser CEO. He is frightened than competition, exposing SONY as a follower, not being capable of being a leader and dictating the pace of their own releases.

Convergence will sort everything out

Anybody remember the days when PC Users slated Mac Users.. and vice versa.. and yet today.. 10% of macbooks have a windows installation whether on the physical machine or virtualised.. and the same goes for Mac OS running on a "windows pc". Technology convergence has brought us to a point where all laptops/desktops whether designed for mac or windows OS are actually 99% identical internally with only the software layer different. multi-boot systems.. virtualisation etc have all led to a point where the PC itsef is merely a generic host for whatever system the user prefers. The same will eventually happen with consoles. To develop your own bespoke CPU or GPU is far too costly for the console manufacturers to continue with. Eventually all consoles will share the majority of their hardware to both reduce costs and speed the development of new consoles. the day is not so far away when you will be able to install xbox live on your psx... or the latest incarnation of Sony's OS on your xbox N. Maybe then we will finally get past the whole argument thing.. just as the AMD vs Intel crowd.. and the Mac vs PC arguments died down once all parties accepted that it's better to actually enjoy using the systems than arguing over who has the best one.

I doubt it.

Consoles make their money from proprietary technology. They exist BECAUSE nobody else can provide that experience. If console tech converges like you say, consoles will cease to exist. When that happens, someone will just make the next big proprietary platform that nobody else can run their stuff on.

XBOX 1!

ok just because playstation is making a new system doesnt mean that xbox has to make a new system. like always they are taking their ideas. playstation has been around longer than xbox so i think ps know what they are doin and ps has a record of having more sold ps systems like the ps3 and ps2 than any other system. im mad at xbox one. not ps.

you realize that one does not

you realize that one does not simply make a console. That the xbox1 has(despite it's recent showcase) has been though over and crafted for long period of time and the only true thing they could copy in a shot time would be trying to match sony's ram or memory or other things of that nature because games have already been developed for it, and that doesn't happen over night either. Not sure if that what you were implying but that what i took it as.

Agree with Bryan Corea

Anonymous dude, maybe its you who need to look at the facts. Sony has been in the Video Game market since 1994, Microsoft have since the turn of the millenium. Sony have a little more experience in this market yes granted Microsofts console was considerably cheaper than the PS3 and ultimately I assume this is what won consumers over. But dude its specs where shit! It was DVD drive where Sony updated to Blu Ray something that Microsoft copied Sony on this generation. And don't get me started on the durability of the Xbox 360! This along with Pay to play online!? I mean don't we pay enough for our gaming experience already!? Microsoft were lucky with current gen Its extremely likely that luck will run out.

Sorry, must have missed the

Sorry, must have missed the part where I said Sony was new to the game. No wait, I didn't. I know full well how long they have been around for (longer than you think actually. A lawsuit delayed them) so they should know better but considering their entrance to the gaming world was ripping off the snes (the lawsuit i mentioned) it's not hard to believe that they need help. Microsoft have more experience than you realize, forget xbox, think pc. They've been around the business longer than anyone but still fail. Great specs are just a load of shit for people to argue over. Any of the companies can put the latest high end tech into their machine, it's all to easy but you need to balance things properly, an external power source would be a great start. Besides, if all machines were equal then we would only be judging by our gaming experiences. The real question is who has more fun on which machine, pure and simple case closed. Graphics obviously mean shit when people play apps on their phones so much. The 360 was a load of shit, the stupid thing broke down too much, it's second failure rate exceeds it's first and that's a complete joke. I fail to see what your point is. Sales figures are dodgy also, considering the failure rates and how many people had to buy one or more extra consoles, the sales figures give a false impression of the true consumer tally. I think rental games for the xbox one will die. Who is going to pay twice for a rental game (one to hire and one to install on the machine). We don't need any blue ray or DVD or other multi-media crap on consoles, it's a waste (something we pay extra for and we don't need it). Everybody copies, yes I said everybody but some can get away with it so think very hard and research things. Do my facts open your eyes a bit or are you still trying to pull your head from your ass

experience?

That's how companies go belly up... Atari had crazy amounts of experience over nintindo but over looked them. Its not luck when research is done

Seriously? Playstation know

Seriously? Playstation know what they are doing? Sold more than any other system? All I'll say is 'do at least some research before you start saying things' you look like a fool when you get things so wrong

Everyone makes mistakes

PS have passed 360 but not Wii so he was partly right but PS3 was the better systems, has better exclusives and has a blu-ray plater so they do know what there doing generally yes. Also Xbox live is a joke atleast playstation plus gives you free games to download and beat

'Partly right' is not right.

'Partly right' is not right. There is proof that they have not sold more than EVERY other console. Also there is proof that they don't know what they are doing, example; the wand. The camera needs to see the blue ball on the wand and when an attachment blocks the view of the blue ball it renders its capabilities useless. I'd really like to know what exclusives it has that you consider better than all others, very interesting concept lol. Lmao, how does blue ray make games better. It sounds like you need some facts also. Interesting factoid for you, playstation rips off ideas from Nintendo, do some research and you will find proof of that too :) Just let me point out that I never said playstation machines aren't any good, I'm just making sure everyone knows it's not quite the best that many think

Nope never seen a Sony red

Nope never seen a Sony red ring. They probably couldn't afford it after every other thing they put into the console. Didn't stop them from biting the dust though. No courtesy light from Sony :( boo hoo

Microsoft and Sony sales are

Microsoft and Sony sales are a bit sketchy too. Because the systems were so faulty most people bought more than just one or two extra. Therefore if you at least half the sales you'd get closer to the actual amount of consumers. Food for thought :)

Not really.

What is the better system is really subjective. If you want to play Gears of war Halo etc the Xbox is your choice. God of War Ps3, Zelda Wii etc. It's all a bit Juvenile that gamers are always resorting to my console is better than yours. Each machine has its merits, people should just enjoy gaming as opposed to have some misplaced loyalty to massive corporative companies.

My Gaming System is Better than your gaming system.

Due to Moore's Law one day it wont matter what you buy, The software titles will sway you towards this system or that one. I don't play games that don't have an ending anymore. NO MMORPG anymore. I like relaxing, not putting every minute of my life into being a slack jawed idiot drooling over pixels. If that is you, you are better off not buying ANY system and throwing them all AWAY! NO PC, NO TABLET, NO VIDEO GAMES ON THE TV. GO OUT AND GET A LIFE BECAUSE GAMING IS NOT LIFE AND LIFE IS NOT GAMING. And those living around you if any can stand being around you anymore have to put up with you being stressed over something stupid as playing a game. The stress bleeds into your real life and you end up taking it out on people you should be spending time with in real life. Put down the joystick and find joy in LIFE. It is fine to play when no one else is around or before bedtime. But to forsake those you love for gaming is a sickness. Break the cycle, go love your family before you end up without them.

Get a life

Dude your being a negative outlook and onffensiveness on peoples lifes who cares we can play whatever we want except if you have a mom. Second you have no regard for life, humanity, and society itself P.S. if you want be offensive go right ahead I'd love to see you behind bars, as for everyone else graphics do not fucking matter what matters is gameplay

Can We All Just Get Along?

Can we all just get along????? I mean seriously! PlayStation and Xbox are both great consoles, my opinion is to just get a mix of both of them, get a better Playstation Store ( like the marketplace ) and free internet like PSN. Microsoft and Sony should just partner up and maybe Nintendo with them since the Wii was a big success the first few years. And only some people let their lives get away from them due to gaming, it's not like everyone who plays video games when they aren't alone means that their family or boyfriend/girlfriend is going to say "You have a problem, you need help, you're not wanted here anymore." i mean seriously man, you're just being a dick by being like that.
