Threadripper 2 CPU benchmark and CPUZ leaks give chip details

Some new details about AMD's upcoming Threadripper 2 CPU with 32 cores and 64 threads have been leaked by a Chinese source. They highlight that the chip runs at a stock clock of 3.4GHz when idling, with a power draw of 250w. It's built on a 12nm process too, so this isn't some future 7nm design -- but what it is, is powerful.

AMD first showed off this new CPU design at Computex. While Intel tried to steal its thunder by showing off a supercooled 28-core CPU the day before, that's proved to be partly bogus, as that CPU is anything but ready for mainstream release. In comparison, Threadripper 2 is coming in the next couple of months and when it does, it could be the most powerful CPU ever released to the public.

With 32 cores, 64 threads and a seeming boosted clock speed of up to 4.2GHz -- who knows what it will be capable of under decent cooling -- the chip performed admirably. In some leaked Cinebench testing from VideoCardz, we see that it actually performs a little better at a slightly lower clock speed where more cores can come into play, but in whatever configuration you have it in, it dominates

It's only air-cooled too, which makes us cautiously excited for what should be possible with more advanced cooling methods.

The chip is said to be called the 2990X, which would make sense considering the previous generation. We also expect the lower-end, 24-core version of the Threadripper 2 design to be called the 2970X.
