Athlon 800 is much faster than the Intel 800 one. You can read the tests at Tom's Hardware site.I have 3 Intel cpus, but if i was going to buy on now, it'd be an ATHLON. Beter performance and better price at this category.

I agree! AMD is really movin now! Pentium3s are all but down in the dust. Geez, the only people that buy them are the rich people that are too scared of change. As for the 1.2mhz heat...AMD cpus do tend to get pretty hot...I wouldn't suggest using an retial heatsink. You should get an Alpha PAL6035 or Global Win FOP-38(fan is loud thou). Well until I buy the AMD I will not know whether it overheats or not. But you must understand that the faster these chips get, the better heat sinks have got to be. Maybe bigger companies may decide to cash in on this and develop better heat sinks for faster computers

Try it... you won't regret it... try Unreal Tournament in both at same speed 800mhz , software render, and you'll see the diference... hehe... i'm not jokin'... AMD is really good... and yes... they really hit a lot... but... i'm interested in speed... if they're fast.. well... you just need a bigger cooler...

I got a gateway. And man does it blow but they managed to put a big *** heat sink on my athlon 700 with a fan blowing out of the case on top of that. So in that way my processor is quite cooled. I would also like to agree with the statement that intel sucks.

the athlons are better than p3s but the k6s are crap. i would recomend a celeron2 over a k6

I think its a bit unfair to compare the PIII to the Athalon as the athalon is far for advanced ie 200MHz FSB! Compared to 100-133MHz FSB of the PIII.Just wait till the P4 comes out and everyone will prefer it. Its just a never ending Battle between Intel and AMD!

From all the incoherrent babbling, most of these responses are from people who are buying pre-built systems, not bright enough to do their own. You are already scr**** from day 1! Unless you're a rich kid, buying the top of the line $3000 system or more, you are hampering the processor by the other components stuck together like a garbage heap. The best processor can be absolutely crippled by a lame system, particularly the motherboard. Forget personal testemonials, reminds me of the inbred geeks on paid programming. Go to the sites where people who do this professionally are comparing them on equivalent systems. Someone mentioned Tom's hardware, good, there are also others. Particularly pay attention to floating point benchmarks, you people are supposed to be gamers. As for heating, if you can't keep your chip cool, someone should shoot you and remove you from the gene pool.

By leaving a gap of 400 MHz in between the Pentium III and 4 at release, Intel is keeping that scenario from happening again. By Q2 2001, (that's after April,) a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 should be available. Even if Intel can keep faster Pentium IIIs off of the market, AMD will not keep faster Athlons off the market while this happens. AMD only could have dreamed about being up against INTEL a year ago and look at them their ******* all over Intel, i my self have a 600mhz AMD durron and it rocks better than any other intel i have ever seen, even the pentium 3 800mhz feels slower and is slower in the benchmarck test for games + its so much cheaper.
